Clinical Advances in a Restorative Practice

This course is designed to bring together the art and science of clinical and esthetic dentistry and will focus on many of the clinical issues we deal with daily in our practices from treatment planning to material selection to execution. Criteria for selection of clinical materials will be discussed based on evidence-based information, not on marketing claims. Additionally, an update on Zirconia materials will be provided: is it the universal restorative material? This program promises to provide a potpourri of clinically relevant topics that we as clinicians can implement immediately into our practices to improve the quality of patient care and satisfaction.

This lecture will present principles, planning guidelines and clinical treatment of creating an esthetic result in cases with varying presentations. In addition to discussing the broken-down dentition, problems with vertical dimension and interocclusal distance, and excessive gingival display will be discussed. Application of techniques will be illustrated to create pleasing clinical results that can be accomplished within the general dental practice.

7:45 a.m. What's New in Restorative Materials?-A Lot- Dr. Wakefield
This lecture will review the current confusing array of restorative materials and clarify the rationale for the selection and clinical use of the most appropriate material in varying clinical situations. The contradictions between marketing and evidence-based information will be made clear. Review and updates on composites, bulk cure technique, core materials, light curing, adhesives, glass ionomers, xerostomia and biocompatibility of materials will be discussed in detail.

During the last decade, zirconia ceramic material has been used extensively in different restorative aspects in dentistry; from single crowns to full arch restorations. ls zirconia the universal restorative material or does it still have some limitations?This lecture will discuss the restorative potentials of zirconia including tooth and implantsupported restorations, and highlights its limitations with respect to other restorative materials

Speaker Information
Charles Wakefield, DDS, MAGD, ABGD, FICD, FACD, graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry and completed a two year AEGD Residency during his 21 year US Army career. He is Board Certified by the Federal Services and American Boards of General Dentistry and is a Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentistry. He has been the Director of AEGD programs at Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Hood, Texas and Medical University of South Carolina. He holds the Surgeon General's "A" designator and is an Adjunct Professor of Comprehensive Dentistry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and was a tenured Professor and Director of the AEGD Residency Program at Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas from 1995-2015. Currently, he is in private practice in Lewisville, Texas with his son, Brian Wakefield, DDS, FAGD.
Barry D. Hammond, DMD, Course Director, earned his dental degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed a general practice residency in Chapel Hill, N.C. He maintained a private practice for 15 years, emphasizing restorative and esthetic dentistry. Dr. Hammond is an L.D. Pankey Institute alumnus and taught for several years with the Ross Nash Institute for Dental Learning in Charlotte, N.C. He joined the AU faculty in 2006 and is a Professor in the Department of General Dentistry and serves as the Director of Dental Continuing Education for The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University.
Ahmed Zaher, BDS, MSD, FRCDC, FICOI, Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences. He received his dental degree at Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University, Egypt. He completed his prosthodontics residency at Louisiana State University, School of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. His teaching and research interests include fixed and removable prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, and ceramic materials.
